Jim Shannon MP for Strangford has welcomed the decision by DARD Michelle O’Neill to agree to exemption for docking of working dogs tails which came into law on 1 January 2013.

He said: “When I was on the DARD committee I made the argument for hunting and working dogs and as MP addressed the committee on the subject and at this stage I would like to thank the committee for their wise and logical decision. The volumes of correspondence from the Hunters and Shooters fraternity have been excellent and officials have accepted reluctantly that working dogs with full tails will have their tails caught in almost every encounter when out on the shooting field.

“The BASC and Countryside Alliance Ireland and other groups have put forward a good case, and they have been rewarded for their endeavours with a decision that was made to protect dogs but also to allow them to be working dogs and this is a victory for common sense and logic.”
