Karen Malmummy has opened up the Spirit of Tyrella, a dog boarding kennels for dogs and a gift shop. She said: “We look after dogs of all sizes from the large to the small and they get first class treatment. So far we have been quite busy.

“The owners bring along the food that their dog likes to eat so the dog is not out of sorts with the short-term change away from their owners. We even encourage owners to bring along their beds and toys so they are really at home. Each dog has its own separate pen and they are also heated so they have all the creature comforts of home.

“For the dogs safety we never let them come into contact with other dogs. We give them plenty of TLC and my husband even takes them into his man cave to keep them company at times. They are just treated like the family. We even privately message photos of the dogs off to their owners on Facebook if they wish to reassure them their dogs are content and happy.

“We have five dogs of our own. I have studied dog first aid and dog behaviour courses so I am quite well qualifies in looking after dogs and understanding their behaviour.

“I was working as a manager in a business in Downpatrick up until recently and decided to take the plunge into setting up my own business. We are located on the main Clanmaghery Road just outside the Ballykinlar end of Tyrella.

“I have also opened a shop where I sell doggie gifts and items such as jewellery and I also do embroidery such as badges and logos and stitching onto clothes etc with dog motifs as a sideline.”

Karen can be contacted at 07713571387 and runs her business 365 days a year.
