Shimna Wheelers Take On France

A group of the Shimna Wheelers have been tackling some of the toughest climbs of the Tour de France in the Alps over the past week.

Members back at home have been looking on in awe at the Strava entries which show the extents of the climbs, some containing well over 3000ft of elevation gain in a mere 8miles!

The group has been expertly guided by our lead out rider Marty McVeigh and fed with fine local cuisine by resident chef Rob. When out of the saddle the Wheelers have reloaded their carbohydrate energy supplies with a mixture of wine and beer, apparently the pro-riders do something similar!

As Big Neil said whilst claiming the Alps for the club: “What a moment in the history of Shimna Wheelers cycling club. Bend 16 of Alp D’Huez is forever ours.” No mountain too high! Chapeau to the Wheelers who tackled the Alps.

Ulster MTB XC Championships – Colebrooke Estate

Well done to all riders who participated at Colebrook in Fermanagh over the weekend. There were very poor conditions after heavy rainfall created muddy trails and some Fermanagh bog land for the riders to contend with!

The club was well represented with Jonathan representing the U-8’s, Peter, Callum and Patrick the U10’s, Leah and Joseph U-12’s, Holly U-14’s, Peadar, Marcus, Sean and Damien in S4 and last but not least Brian Steele winning the Ulster Title for his category.

This was fantastic representation by the club and there was great support from family and friends who turned out to cheer on riders on a wet and miserably day. The race proved a tough event with some riders completing their 1st ever XC event. The club gazebo was a great help to everyone and provided a centre point for the social side of the outing.

Hopefully this will be the beginning of a growing and important side of the clubs development. Well done to all and a massive applause for our youth members, Shimna Rockets, who continue to make our efforts worthwhile.
