Macmillan Cancer Targets Half Million in World's Biggest Coffee Morning

MACMILLAN Cancer Support has launched an appeal to the people of Down to help it raise over £500,000 by drinking coffee and eating cake and beating last year’s total.

The cancer charity wants this year’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning to be the biggest ever.

The charity is hoping many coffee mornings will take place across the Down District attracting hundreds of people and raising £10,000.

The appeal for locals to sign up is being backed by the Chairman of Down District Council, Councillor Maria McCarthy who said: “It is a fantastic community event for everyone to get involved in and I know the number of people from Down District taking part is actually growing year on year.  It would be good to make it even more successful this year. I am delighted to support the event in aid of such a great cause.”

Macmillan’s fundraising manager for the Down District, Joanne Young said: “We want to make sure no one has to face cancer alone, but we can’t do it without the amazing people who fundraise for us.

“Last year we raised a record-breaking amount of money form the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning and we really hope we can repeat that again this year.

“We’re asking people to once again invite their friends, relatives or workmates to come for coffee and help support Macmillan.

“It’s a fun and easy way to raise money to help Macmillan be there for people with cancer and their families when they need us most.”

The money raised from the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is used to fund services such Macmillan Nurse Specialists, Benefits and Money advisors and to provide grants to families who are feeling the financial strain of a cancer diagnosis.

Fundraiser Joanne added: “Sadly the number of people being diagnosed with cancer is increasing every year and that means Macmillan’s support for people living with cancer is in more demand than ever.

“Every pound raised by those taking part in events like World’s Biggest Coffee Morning will help us fund our vital services in the Down District area.”

The official World’s Biggest Coffee Morning day is on September 27 but events can be held any time.
