Have you ever wondered what all the fuss is about opera? This is your opportunity to find out or maybe convince a loved one! Portico is delighted to invite you to the first season of our Opera Film Club with films on the first . Music critic Michael Quinn will introduce each screening, telling us about the composers, the operas and the productions – all from the world’s greatest opera houses.

Don’t miss la bohème at Portico.

The operas begin with the ever-popular classic of Puccini’s La bohème from the Teatro Real, Madrid. Giancarlo del Monaco’s 2006 cinematic realisation of Puccini’s popular masterpiece takes its place among the great interpretations of modern times. Jesús López Cobos conducts an outstanding cast led by Inva Mula’s Mimì and Aquiles Machado’s Rodolfo, in a landmark Teatro Real production filmed in High Definition and true surround sound. Love, longing and loss in a freezing Paris garret – this traditionally staged production is packed with beautiful arias and full of emotion – don’t forget your tissues!

This Bohème is a glorious vindication of traditional staging at its imaginative, re-creative best. Giancarlo Del Monaco… comes up with a humdinger of a production, beautifully set by Michael Scott in period, fast-moving and full of pertinent detail

It’s in Italian with English subtitles. Duration: 149 minutes. Bring a cushion!

During the screening there will be an interval of 15 minutes when a complimentary glass of wine or tea/coffee will be served with the opportunity to discuss the opera with like-minded individuals. The evening will end in good time for those who wish to catch the last ferry to Strangford at 11.15pm.
