Castlewellan Traders Should Appeal Their Rates Says Rogers

South Down SDLP MLA Seán Rogers attended last week’s meeting organised by Castlewellan Regeneration Ltd to discuss the huge increase many businesses have experienced in their rates.

dn_screenMr Rogers said: “I was pleased to be able to attend this meeting however it was awful to hear the difficulties that many of these traders are experiencing.

“Castlewellan is a superb town with many local people investing heavily in their businesses for the future and these businesses should be nurtured, encouraged and supported by Government.

“However due to Reval 2015, local businesses have had their properties revalued and many have seen a huge jump in their rates bills, as a direct result of this valuation. I would urge traders to check out the Reval 2015 website where you can see the valuations and can compare like for like.

“This can be good evidence when seeking an appeal. Historically rate payers were reluctant to seek an appeal as the NAV could go up or down and this is something to be wary of however given some of the increases that have been reported to me – some people may have no option.

“I have also came across a mistake so it is important to examine the bill, the valuation and explore it further. Only for this trader highlighting his huge bill to me – he would have been liable for the massive increase.”

Mr Rogers added: “My office is more than willing to assist any local trader – whether it is simply to ask a few questions or alternatively to seek an appeal.”
