Walker And Andrews To Compete In Play Off At Bright Golf Course For Charity

They’re at it again!

They best of friends, Councillors Terry Andrews (SDLP) and Billy Walker (DUP), have decided to follow up on their recent boxing match and have a contest on the golf course.

Neither of the two have ever played the game of golf before so it will be a question of both teeing off on the first tee box at Bright Golf Course and seeing who can keep the score down to a respectable level of strokes.

But the Councillor Walker Councillor Andrews Open Golf Day is a day of golf for everyone to enjoy as they once again fundraise for the Killyleagh Youth Club Drop In and for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Cllr Walker said: “We had great fun holding our boxing match in the Bridge Centre in Killyleagh with around 300 in attendance cheering us on. Now we are teeing off for our favourite charities and it should be a brilliant day out at Bright Golf Course. We are confident this will be a success.

“We have set a date for Saturday 24 October starting at 9am and hope to see the tees well booked up for this Stableford competition.

“We are looking for fourballs to sign up now for this event. Cost will be £20 a head. And we would like local business people to sponsor the holes, the nearest the pin and the longest drive competitions. So if anyone wants to help out, please contact myself on 07886828572 or Terry on 07879998559. Fourballs will go out every ten minutes.”

Cllr Terry Andrews added: “There will be prizes on the day too so it will be a great day out for all the participants and will certainly be a challenge for Billy and myself.

“Already we are talking about abseiling down the tower of Killyleagh Castle for our next venture or possibly climbing Slieve Donard. The abseil definitely will be a serious challenge for both of us as neither of us psychologically can stand heights. It will also be a physical challenge too which we will no doubt have to train for.”

Alzheimers Society Down and Lisburn Group volunteer Clare Keenan said: “We’re delighted that Billy and Terry are being so public spirited and playing the game for a day to raise funds for our charity. It is very much appreciated.”

Andy Boal, Alzheimers Society Community Fundraiser, added: “It is important to see this event as not just a fundraising exercise but also an event to raise awareness too about the need to keep fighting Alzheimers.

“We welcome the new drugs which may lead to a breakthrough in medicine and provide some respite for the suffers of this terrible trouble. Our society provides care for the sufferers and support for the families and carers. There are 21,000 people in Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK just now with dementia which is quite a staggering figure.”

Killyleagh Youth Club leader Chris Hagan also commented: “Billy and Terry lead the way in charity fundraising by example. They have been helping the young people of Killyleagh and the wider area and the community recognises their great efforts.

“They raised a fantastic £2500 last year in their boxing session which was a very entertaining evening. We are all looking forward to the golf match now.”
