Jim Shannon, MP for Strangford, speaking after a meeting with Chief Inspector Gillian West, the new district Inspector for the Killyleagh, Saintfield and Ballynahinch area said: “It was a most helpful meeting. The amount of Dissident Republican activity in the district was discussed. The PSNI have a good handle on what is ongoing in the area and it is obvious that Dissidents have been infiltrated and the police are keeping a keen eye on what they are up to.

“The need for police patrols in this rural area is so important and at present, four vehicles are on patrol at any one time and it is felt that they need to be more centralized. There have been 10 people killed on the roads in the area so far this year and there is a need for a proactive strategy to reduce fatalities on the road.

“There will be a campaign starting in the area to ensure that this happens and that can only be good news for the area. The important relationships that PSNI have with the community, and elected representatives will be maintained and where necessary enhanced and I would encourage the country to contact and stay in touch with the PSNI because working together with the PSNI is the only way to improve policing in the Ards.”
