St Mary's High School Lifts Prestigious United Nations Global Citizen Award

Two Year 14 students from St Mary’s High School have been presented  with the United Nations Global Citizens Award.

Aimee Straney and Leontia Maginn received the highly prestigious award from Sr Vianney on behalf of Sr Deidre Mullan, Director of the Mercy Global Concern at the united Nations in New York.

Sr Vianney said: “It is very seldom that this award is given and it is very seldom that it is given to a school. The two students have been recognised for their voluntary work that they have undertaken in the local community and the way in which they have been prepared to improve the quality of life of other people.”

Both students are also very active in their school community fundraising for charities, raising awareness of global poverty, and carrying on the Mercy tradition of the founder, Catherine McAuley.  The Sisters of Mercy are currently working worldwide in 43 countries.

The school Principal Mrs Sheila Darling said: “The school is very honoured to have been presented with this award. At St Mary’s we encourage every student to make their contribution to their local community and to society, and it is fitting that two of our students have been recognised in this way.”
