THE Killyleagh YC clubhouse was packed last Friday evening as excited young players gathered along with their parents and club mentors for their annual presentation night.

Killyleagh U-11's

Terry Pateman, IFA Vice President, with Killyleagh U-11's Manager's Player of the Year, Curtis Ross, Most Improved Player, Jake Drysdale, and Conor Hamilton, Top Goal Scorer and Player of the Year.

Mark Quigley, U-11 manager opened the proceedings thanking all the sponsors and helpers for their kind support and said he would keep his promise of buying all the young players a McFlurry ice cream at McDonald’s! He said that he was delighted at the performance of the young players this past year.

Guest for the evening was Terry Pateman, IFA Vice-President, who addressed the players. He said, “All the great players I know started off just like you all, playing in youth soccer. There they learned all the football skills from their managers and coaches and enjoyed turning up each week for their games.

“It is important to be enjoying the game and also to listen to to your teachers. They are the experts. They will make you play better and your teams play better. You just have to set yourself little targets and your game will gradually improve. Just look around the room. Here there are losts of people doing courses in soccer to help build up a good Killyleagh team.

“Around £2 million has been set aside for Grassroots soccer this year and we have grants from the Department of Education for the next three years. What we need now is for your parents to be on hand and all your managers and coaches as all of these courses and benefits start to come about. That is the future of the U-11′s in Killyleagh.”

Two letters were also read out to the young players. The first was from David Healy, NI international player, who said, “This may be your first summer playing soccer so just try and improve your game with the help that you get.” And secondly, “Trevor Carson said, “It is good to have a keen interest every week in soccer. I enjoy training and still do. Just train hard, and the results will come. And enjoy your soccer and you will be winners.”

The prize winners were:

Most Improved Player: Jake Drysdale.

Top Goal Scorer and Player of Year: Conor Drysdale.

Managers’ Player of the Year: Curtis Ross.

U-17 Rossglass Through To Final

Posted by Jim Masson On May - 8 - 2011

Celtic Bhoys 0 Rossglass 0 (Rossglass won 0-2 on pens)

The U-17 Celtic Bhoys faced Rossglass County is the cup semi-final at Dunleath Park on Saturday and it turned out to be a memorable day for young Dale Hutson of Rossgalss who played a stormer for his team. He had an outstanding game while marking the dangerous Celtic forward Jamie Kelly.

Rossglass and Tollymore

U-17 action between Rossglass and Tollymore last September. Who will win on May 21st?

As Rossglass plied a number of very effective attacks against Celtic Bhoys, it was Rossglass defenders Robbie Hagen and Eamonn Vaughn who helped keep the ball out of their net with keeper Ryan Vaughn having a superb game on form handling the ball well. Rossglass had been quite resolute throughout.

The teams drew after full time and it was down to penalties. Rossglass keeper Ryan Vaughn saved four shots taken by Celtic Bhoys and it was AJ delaney and Cathal Sloan who slotted the ball into the Celtic net to put them deservedly in the final against Tollymore. Captain Eamon Vaughan missed his shot adding to the drama.

The final is on May 21st and this will be a stiff challenge for the Rossglass team who did well to overcome a strong Celtic outfit. Tollymore are a well disciplined and well trained team and will be no push-overs. But Rossglass have battled well through the season showing they are a team to be reckoned with. This match could be the highlight of the DYFL for the season. Manager Vincent Perry was delighted with his team reaching the final and winning 0-2 on penalties.

Some of the young Rossglass stars will no doubt be looking for places in senior teams and local managers will be eyeing them up on the day.

DYFL – Temple U-11 Report

Posted by Jim Masson On May - 4 - 2011

TEMPLE Youth’s U-11 side faced the Patrican on Saturday morning at Dunleath in the cup and despite a spirited performance with a much depleted side were knocked out.

The 1st half saw Temple’s young guns adapting to playing in unfamiliar positions but they did so with credit. Rhys Kelly and Victoria Burtney both worked hard in the centre of midfield and were covering a lot of ground pushing forward and helping out their defence. Luke Curry and Joshua Gibson worked tirelessly on the wings and Scott McCaw, Bradley Brechin and Harry Wilson coped very well at the back against a good Patrician attacking frontline. Temple fell behind midway through the half but responded well knuckling down and creating some chances of their own, Rhys Kelly going closest to scoring.

The second half saw another reshuffle for Temple with the dependable Harry Wilson’s injury meaning him having to play out the game up front as Temple had no subs available to make any changes. Joshua Gibson dropped into the back line but Patrican capitalised on Temple weakness scoring a couple of quick goals to put the game safe. Shane Gibson popped up with another cracking finish to pull a goal back for Temple when his well hit shot flew in off the inside of the post and Rhys Kelly and Harry Wilson combined well to continue to give the Patrican defence plenty to keep them occupied.

The Patrican always looked dangerous though and scored again late on the snuff out any chance of a Temple comeback. Man of the Match for Temple was Scott McCaw with good performances form Victoria Burtney, Rhys Kelly and Shane Gibson. All the young players deserve a lot of credit for what was a very spirited performance with a much weakened side.
