Accompanying them on the trip was Newcastle Councillor Carmel O’Boyle who said, “I was delighted to be asked to accompany a group of our local bowlers to look at bowling greens and club-houses in Kilkeel, Rathfriland and Banbridge.

“As Chair of Down District Council’s Leisure Facilities Working Group, it is important that I know what standard of provision we need to be aiming for when we design new bowling facilities for our local bowling club members. I found the visits very useful and what I learned on this trip will inform the support I will continue to give to our bowlers.

“As we move steadily forward in our council towards the provision of a new and long overdue leisure centre, the needs of our bowlers will be at the top of the list, as far as I am concerned. We will continue to work closely together to ensure that this sport is given the recognition and facilities it deserves.

“While we have an ever-growing elderly population, bowls is a sport that has an increasing number of younger members, and the facilities we provide must reflect the sport’s popularity.”

AT the sun-baked Downpatrick Bowling Club on the Strangford Road, the Downpatrick bowlers were all focused on their task in hand. Visiting club Mossley had come to play them in the Junior 1 Section of the Northern Ireland Private Greens competitition.

The first rink skippered by Patrick Rooney beat Mossely’s Tom Back rink by 19 points to 12. This was a convincing win by Downpatrick.

Rink two led by Kieran McMullan also played very strongly with a resounding victory at 32 points over the 8 of J Kelly’s Mossley rink.

But is was not all plain sailing as Marcus Smyth’s rink met stiff opposition from the R Cambleton four losing 11-18.

It was then up to the the last Derek McCann skippered fourth Downpatrick rink to win the day and they returned an accomplished 39 points, the highest score for the home team on the day.

Mossley could only gather up 12 points in the face of such eagle-eyed opposition.

Downpatrick finished with 101 points to Mossley’s 50, and won 6-1 overall.
