Shannon Concerned At Portaferry Road Flooding

dn_screenStrangford MP Jim Shannon has expressed his concern over flooding on the A20 Portaferry Road at Kircubbin.

He indicated that Transport NI must take urgent action to alleviate the flooding and ponding of water on the A20 between Ards and Kircubbin.

He said: “After heavy rain, the ponding of water and the subsequent danger to vehicles on the main Portaferry Road is significant. The danger points continue to be at the Maltings Ards, the junction of Finlays Road and Portaferry Road, at Mountstewart between the trees and wooded area and at Wardens down to the Sailing Club.

“Water lies at these locations during and after heavy rain and it is clear to me and to all of the road users that the gullies in this area need to be cleared and cleaned.

“Water runs off the field and lane at the Maltings in a steady flow – at Finlays Road direct the excess water towards Strangford Lough and away, at Mountstewart gullies are blocked and at Wardens again down to Strangford lough, clear the obstruction at the sea-wall and direct flood water toward the tide and Lough.

“Simple solutions can be delivered quickly, and if done, flooding can be avoided, traffic safety improved and difficult weather conditions can be coped with and danger reduced.

“I would implore Transport NI to take these remedial steps now – safety is paramount and they must now play their part.”
