SERC Inspire Next Generation Entrepreneurs

A creative group of ambitious students from South Eastern Regional College (SERC) have put their enterprise skills to the test by setting up their very own SERC student company, which has unleashed their inner-entrepreneur.

Thanks to SERC’s Enterprise and Entrepreneurship programme, and with the help of Commercial Mentor, Geraldine Boden, the group of student entrepreneurs have been involved in all areas of running the business including business planning, marketing, proto-typing, pricing, branding, customer service and sales.

Made up of a combination of art and engineering students, the commercial enterprise designs, manufactures and sells bespoke consumer products including key rings and iPad covers!

19-year old Manufacturing Engineering student Beth Taggart from Downpatrick said: “The experience of starting a business has given me an ‘insight into the highs and lows of starting up, how important it is to persist, and the rewards it can bring.”

Beth, who is going onto university to study Engineering Management in September, added: “The experience has definitely given me an insight into what is required to set up my own business. We got the opportunity to experience first-hand the real life challenges entrepreneurs face.”

SERC endeavours to encourage enterprise amongst students as SERC’s Director of Corporate and Economic Development, Thompson Keating, said: “These activities are designed to enhance and enrich the students’ enterprise awareness and develop employability skills. Encouraging students to consider entrepreneurial opportunities is an important part of what the College offers.”

SERC Student companies are designed to give students the opportunity to establish and manage their own businesses over the course of an academic year. As a result, the students are not only getting ‘real life’ business training and exposure to real business people, but they are taking the responsibility, the decisions and the risks!

A range of full and part-time courses is provided by SERC designed to give students ‘the edge’ through industry projects and a range of work placements to give them the skills needed to succeed in their chosen career.
