SDLP Councillor Peter Craig welcomed the beginning of works on the grounds of the St Patrick Monument between Saul and Raholp at last night’s Council meeting.
Councillor Craig said, “I am delighted to welcome this work which will improve access to St Patrick’s Monument for the general public and tourists to our district. St Patrick’s Monument has long been a popular attraction in our area, even now, before this work starts, the people flock to Slieve Patrick.
“This construction work will not only improve access but also provided seating along the route, and provide new viewing area. It will continue to promote St Patrick as a focal point for tourism in Down District.”
Councillor Maria McCarthy, in seconding Councillor Craig, said, “I fully support Councillor Craig’s comments and welcome this work. St Patrick and his legacy are an asset to Down District, particularly in terms of attracting tourists to the area. I have no doubt this improvement work will ensure that locals, tourists and visitors alike will be able to enjoy the St Patrick’s Heritage Trail and view, in both safety and comfort, the spectacular views from Slieve Patrick out over Strangford Lough and around the Lecale.”
