AS news of the Euro scampi factory in Potavogie laying off 30 workers broke last week, a sense of devastation has run through the community.
Ards SDLP Councillor and Assembly election candidate Joe Boyle said, “These job losses are a terrible blow for Portavogie, a village which depends heavily on the fishing industry for employment.
“Running a fish and chip shop, I have made a lot of contact with suppliers and business in Portavogie and know that it is the backbone of the local economy.
“There is not a lot of work in the Ards Peninsula at the moment. The former employees of this factory are in a great state of distress, wondering how they are going to feed and clothe their families.
“I hope that all efforts are made to try and save this company and a solution is found for its workers.”
