Ms Ruane said: “The acknowledgement by both the Assembly and the Irish Government that a bridge at Narrow Water has the potential to open up the entire region to business and tourism is a very positive development.

“The paper outlines a joint review to report back to the North-South Ministerial Council by June 2016. So I am confident we can convince all parties that this project can be reinstated in the second half of next year.

“It is essential we continue to line up all the funding, including the SEUPB monies, so that we can influence this decision in a positive manner.

“I will continue to work with my colleagues in Louth and all other bodies involved to deliver this project for the entire communities of South Down and North Louth.”
