Ritchie Welcomes Assurance Over Regional Power on Fisheries
SOUTH Down MP Margaret Ritchie has received an assurance that the British Government is confident and determined on the issue of regional powers for fisheries management.
Ms Ritchie said: “Today in the House of Commons I sought assurances from the Foreign and Commonwealth Minister David Lidington on the Government’s commitment to securing regionalisation under the current review of the Common Fisheries Policy.
“Regionalisation of fishery management powers and the formation of Regional Advisory Forums have the potential to improve management of fish stocks and secure the sustainability of the fishing industry.
“I was encouraged by the Minister’s positive response. Specifically he said that the Government were confident and determined to do their utmost to deliver the deal on regionalisation which I have been calling on for some time.
“I welcome this very positive response and I will continue to exert pressure at all levels of Government to secure the deal on regional fisheries powers, the future of sustainable fish stocks and to promote the fishing industry in South Down.”
