Ritchie Says Law Must Do More To Protect Dogs From Puppy Farming Cruelty

South Down MP Margaret Ritchie has met with PupAid to discuss the puppy farming and has urged the Government to do more to close down cruel breeders operating in Britain and Northern Ireland.

She said: “Puppy farming is inherently cruel to both puppies and their mothers and must be brought to an end. Commercial breeding often sees puppies taken away from their mothers when they are too young by breeders who are more concerned about raising their own profits than raising the animals in their charge.”

Puppy farming is big business where one female dog can earn up to over £20,000 in its lifetime.

“The EFRA Select Committee, of which I am a member, is currently undertaking an inquiry into pet welfare, and we will be making formal recommendations to the Government in due course. I will do my part to ensure these recommendations include greater action to end puppy farming and the cruel separation of puppies and mothers at a young age.”

Puppies that have been bred in deplorable puppy farm conditions could be matted in faceless and urinem and may be harbouring several health issues which could be expensive to treat at a later stage with the vet. And demand for designer dogs may add to the problem.

Bitches may be bred so often by unscrupulous puppy farm owner that they become exhausted, and even die in their cages and pens. Often they are fed on food that has poor nutritional value and may be contaminated.

These puppies which find their way on to the market as cuddly wee pets may harbour a number of inherent diseases and health issues, even rabies.
