Principal Urges More Students To Opt For STEM Higher Education Courses

With many students across the province receiving their A level results, Mr. Ken Webb, Principal of South Eastern Regional College, is strongly encouraging students to consider enrolling onto a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math’s) course at their local College.

Mr Webb has also expressed concern about the low enrolment of students, especially women, in STEM subjects; who are instead gearing towards Business courses and the Arts.

He said: “With STEM subjects a key driver of economic growth and prosperity, I am encouraging students to explore the many possibilities that their local Further Education College can offer and how exciting and rewarding a STEM career can be.

“With men outnumbering women by three to one in STEM careers I am urging parents and careers advisors to promote and enroll their children in subjects that focus on academic excellence. I want women to aim higher and students to make brave decisions by undertaking programmes that will contribute to the country’s development to accelerate growth.”

Mr Webb added: “Employers have informed us that a qualification is not enough anymore and students need to have much more in terms of skills and experience including communication and commercial acumen. We have the skills and expertise to deliver this.”

According to him, these attributes are the elixirs that enable students to excel, not just in academia but also in life.

SERC have responded by offering an extensive range of higher education qualifications including new Foundation degrees in Computing and Software Development, Mechatronic Engineering, Applied and Medical Science and an HND in Manufacturing Engineering.

With 97 percent of SERC students progressing into employment, self-employment or onto higher level courses on completion of their course; SERC is a great example of how the Further Education sector offers a real alternative to university for intelligent and ambitious people who want to work towards internationally- recognised qualifications and a rewarding career.

Students seeking a higher education course should call into the college to discuss the range of courses on offer and avail of STEM careers advice. To find out how SERC can help you ‘get the edge’ call 0845 600 7555, visit:
