Portaferry RNLI was requested to launch its inshore lifeboat at around 2.30pm today (Monday 14 July) to a man who had suffered a head injury in one of the races during the Portaferry Sailing Club’s annual regatta.

The lifeboat launched sped to the scene at 2.36pm and met up with the injured man on board the 12-metre yacht just off Marfield Bay in Strangford Lough in  County Down a few minutes later.

The weather at the time was cloudy with good visibility, a force two to three southerly wind and calm seas.

The volunteer crew from the Portaferry RNLI, having assessed the injured man’s condition, transferred him into the lifeboat before taking him to Strangford Harbour where he was then passed into the care of the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service and taken to hospital.
