During the coming weeks police hope to raise awareness of burglary and how householders can secure their home and property. Officers will be conducting high visibility and anti-burglary patrols and aim to visit some of the more isolated in our communities to provide reassurance and crime prevention information.

Commander for Newry, Mourne and Down, Superintendent Simon Walls, said: “Over the coming weeks we will be focusing on raising awareness of burglary and encouraging householders to be more security aware.

“We want you to feel safe in your own community but we also want you to be aware that thieves and burglars will seize any opportunity for an easy steal.

“We will increase our patrols and provide you with advice on protecting your home however our best weapon against the burglar is information.

“As part of our focus we are asking you to work with your neighbours and keep an eye on your local neighbourhood. If you see a vehicle which looks out of place or not quite right, phone us. If you see someone hanging round one of your neighbour’s homes, phone us. If you have concerns or need advice, phone us.

“Our non-emergency number is 101 and 999 in an emergency. We do not want you to become a victim of burglary so our advice is simple – lock your home, secure windows and doors and report any suspicious activity to police at the earliest opportunity.”
