Just before 2.20am on the morning of Sunday 20 September, an oil tank was set on fire at flats in the area. No-one was injured in the incident, however, damage was caused to three properties. Two male youths were earlier seen near the property and are believed to have been carrying a rug or mat.

A link is being investigated between this and another arson of an oil tank at a different address in the Bracken Avenue area, which occurred at approximately 2am on the morning of Thursday 24 September. This oil tank was at an unoccupied address. It was destroyed and damage was caused to fencing and the rear of the property.

Detective Inspector Graham said: “The two male youths who were seen near the first fire may not have been involved in this incident and could have been residents in the area. However, I would very much like them to come forward to eliminate them from our enquiries.

“I would also ask anyone who knows anything about either of these incidents to contact detectives at Downpatrick Police Station on the non emergency number 101. Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
