SDLP Councillor Eamonn ONeill has condemned the recent paramilitary threats to people in the Castlewellan area.
He said, “It is appalling that as a people we are still have to suffer the neo-fascist tactics of self-appointed paramilitary – type groups of whatever kind. It is frightening to think that there are still people out there who want to behave in such a way. After all we have come through it is not clear that the use of violence and paramilitarism is not just abhorrent to the overwhelming majority of the Irish people but it has clearly failed?
“We in the SDLP have been from our foundation consistently against the use of paramilitarism and violence for the simple reason that our main problem always has been that it is our people that are divided and such tactics only create greater division.”
Councillor O’Neill added, “There is a straight message for these people. These failed policies are not going to get us anywhere only back into the mire of bloody murder and destruction. I call on those who issued these threats to give it up stop talking about spilling more blood and start talking about spilling some sweat in building a new peaceful Ireland.”
