SDLP Newcastle Councillor Carmel O’Boyle has pressed Roads Service to fix the ‘hazardous’ potholes in Newcastle.
Councillor O’Boyle said, “Following the thawing of ice from the cold snap, our roads are in very poor condition with many potholes on main roads proving hazardous for drivers.
“A number of people have complained to the SDLP about the potholes close to the Castlewellan Road roundabout and I have contacted Roads Service to immediately patch these dangerous gaps in the road which are met every day by a high volume of road users.
“Not only are they causing damage to vehicles, but they are proving particularly dangerous by the many drivers who swerve suddenly in an attempt to avoid them on this very busy route.
“Sinn Féin Roads Minister Conor Murphy has cut the road maintenance budget which means that there will be less money available to repair problems like potholes on our roads. This is extremely short-sighted and will hit drivers, particularly those in rural communities, hard,” she added.
