Northern Ireland Fisheries And Harbour Authority Appointments

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) today has announced the appointment of two new members to the Board of the NI Fishery Harbour Authority.

dn_screenMs Kate Burns and Mr Davey Hill have been appointed as Board members of the Authority. The appointments will be for a term of four years and will take effect from 1 December 2015.

Welcoming the appointments, Fisheries Minister Michelle O’Neill MLA said: “The successful candidates have clearly demonstrated that they possess the knowledge and experience to make a valuable contribution to the work of the Harbour Authority.

“I have no doubt that they will be able to assist the Authority as it takes forward its important work of managing and improving fishery harbour infrastructure and services.”

The Minister also paid tribute to previous board members, Mr Roy Teggarty and Mr Harold Henning whose term ended on the 30 November 2015. The Minister said: “Roy and Harold made a valuable contribution to the work of the Authority in difficult times. I would like to thank them for their service and dedication and wish them all the best for the future.”

(Northern Ireland) 1970 and the Northern Ireland Fishery Harbour Authority Order (Northern Ireland) 1973. The Authority has responsibility for the improvement, management and maintenance of the three fishery harbours at Ardglass, Kilkeel and Portavogie.

The appointments were made in accordance with The Commissioner for Public Appointments in Northern Ireland’s “Code of Practice”. A selection panel, which included an independent assessor, as required under the Commissioner’s Code, considered the suitability of all candidates. The final decision on the appointment rested with the Minister.

Board members each receive £3,825 per annum in respect of their appointment.

Kate Burns is the Managing Director of Ocean Veg Ireland Ltd based in Rathlin Island and has a Rathlin fishing family background. She has had a varied professional career including CEO of ICBAN and Director at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute and was appointed a Trustee of Belfast Metropolitan College in September 2015.

Davey Hill has been involved in the fishing industry for some 30 years and is a skipper and vessel owner and more recently as a Director of ANIFPO/SeaSource, where he has particular responsibility for SeaSource Offshore operations. He has held a number of representative roles, including a previous President of NFFO.

These appointments have been made in accordance with the CPA NI Code of Practice.
