SOUTH Down MP Margaret Ritchie visited the new midwifery-led a the Downe Hospital on Thursday (23rd June). She was met by the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust Chief Exective Hugh McCaughey and Seamus McGoran, Director of Hospital Services.

Ms Ritchie said, “I was very pleased to visit this wonderful new unit for local mothers and to meet with some of the mothers and their babies. The Unit is itself a very impressive and relaxing facility and provides services for local mothers pre-natal as well as the mid-wife led unit for births.

“This facility, for low-risk mothers, is a great asset to our local health care provision and it is vital in this difficult time for health and the economy that we support this local health provision.

“I was able to witness first hand the high professional standards employed by the mid-wifery  staff, and the very relaxing and friendly atmosphere provided for mothers at both the booking clinics pre –natal and in the delivery suites.

“I would encourage GP ‘s from Down District and the Mourne area to visit this new facility and to witness first hand new birthing choice that is available for their patients, and I look forward to working with the staff and the unit in the future and to many more such visits.”
