Model Farm Resident Fears Anti-Social Behaviour

A local resident in the Model Farm estate in Downpatrick has spoken out and complained that the anti-social behaviour by young people is at a constant high and is not reducing despite efforts from local agencies.

The resident, who wished to remain unnamed, spoke to Down News and said police had been around the area but when anyone complained to them it was “basically pointless”.

She said: “A neighbour has had her wheelie bin stolen and the neighbours on both sides too also lost their bins, despite her having chained her back gate. I understand this was reported to the Council and the Police but little can be done to stop this sort of behaviour it seems.

“Many people who are the victims of crimes of anti-social behaviour are on benefits as are most people on the estates here. There has been quite a lot of minor damage such as fence posts being ripped out. One resident had a break-in and a number of CD’s stolen.

“I have even seen small polythene bags lying near areas where there are empty beer cans and booze bottles. I think these are the result of drug use. The kids seem to congregate at certain points. The odd wheelie bins gets burned I’ve no doubt.

“This madness has to stop. We are living in fear. People are literally afraid to go out now especially at night to go to the shop even. There are often groups of youngsters hanging around. Street lights have been broken and fences set alight. It’s just awful. I would like to move out of the estate but it’s easier said than done.

“I know the police have tried and the PCSP too, but surely something needs to be done before we all end up afraid to walk our own streets.”

“Meetings have taken place with Transport NI, the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, County Down Rural Community Network, Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, the Education Authority and community representatives to look at measures that will combat this.

“The Police Service of Northern Ireland are also continuing to provide foot patrols in the area.
