During October, your local Downpatrick MediCare branch will be holding a Pink Party Day that will see staff hosting something fun like a coffee morning, dress pink day or a pamper party!

The money raised from the Pink Party Day will be invested in local research led by Dr Kienan Savage at Queen’s University Belfast that focuses on both the prevention and treatment of breast cancer. This research is funded by Cancer Focus NI.

Colin Deehan, Professional Services Manager with MediCare Pharmacy Group, said: “MediCare is delighted to work in partnership with Cancer Focus NI on its Think Pink campaign.  We feel that being able to raise funds and support this important research has the potential to make an enormous difference to the lives of many local women.”

Caroline McIlwain, Corporate Fundraising Officer with Cancer Focus NI, said: “We are delighted that MediCare and their staff have come on board to help us.

“Last year, our Think Pink campaign raised £30,000, which helped researchers at Queen’s to discover that there may be an alternative treatment to surgery for women with the mutated BRCA1 gene – it’s these women who have an 85% risk of breast cancer, and up to a 40% risk of ovarian cancer. “At present, many of these women – like Holywood star Angelina Jolie – face the difficult decision to have surgery to remove their breasts and ovaries to avoid cancer. This new research could change all that and help so many local women.

“We hope to beat our total from last year’s Think Pink campaign to help us fund this vital research, so please call in to your local MediCare on their Pink Party Day and make a donation.”
