Local First On Agenda As Council Meets With NIIRTA

A new initiative is emerging to support the retail sector in South Down.

Councillor Naomi Bailie, Chairperson of Newry, Mourne & Down District Council has met with the Chief Executive of the Northern Ireland Independent Retail Trade Association.

Cllr Naomi Bailie was delighted to welcome Glyn Roberts, Chief Executive of the Northern Ireland Independent Retail Trade Association (NIIRTA) to the Downshire Civic Centre in Downpatrick to discuss the challenges facing independent retailers in the current economic climate.

Mr Roberts outlined the principles of the ‘Local First’ policy priorities for local economic development as identified by NIIRTA and encouraged Council to develop and deliver initiatives which promote local goods and services.

Councillor Bailie confirmed her support for the ‘Make it Local’ initiatives and highlighted the need for Council to work in partnership with local retailers. She said: “I intend to work with Council officials and representatives from the local chambers of commerce to develop a culture of ‘make it local’, thereby enhancing the sustainability of our vibrant city and various town centres across the district.

“I would encourage as many businesses as possible to embrace the ‘make it local’ approach to trade practices.”
