Downpatrick Railway Appeals For Old Photographs And Artefacts

ON the eve of the 62th Anniversary of the closure of the old Belfast and County Down Railway lines on the 15th January, the Downpatrick & Co. Down Railway is relaunching its annual appeal for artefacts. Railway volunteer and photo archivist Robert Gardiner explained to Down News that it is important that old items such as photographs are recorded and preserved to show what life on the railway was like before the line was closed in 1950.

 Know Your Rights When Christmas Shopping

WITH Christmas Day drawing ever closer most of us will be hitting the high street this week to finish our Christmas shopping. But when buying gifts for family and friends, the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment’s Trading Standards Service (TSS) says it’s important to know your rights in case things go wrong, and purchases need to be returned. Just knowing some of the basics could mean you won’t be stuck with faulty or unwanted gifts.

 DISRUPTION NOTICE FOR DOWN NEWS – UPGRADING

DOWN News will be upgrading its Internet newspaper website over the next week and hopefully it will be a better experience for the many surfers and supporters since it was first set up in October 2009.

The website may be down for up to two days with some other technical issues, but this is necessary to accommodate the transfer of hosting etc to improve the service generally.

There is a considerable amount of data to work with and it is a complex process.

Jazz Trio Featuring Rising Young Star to Play Castlewellan

DOWN Arts Service welcomes the return of Irish drumming force David Lyttle to Down district with a new trio featuring Andreas Varady, a fast-rising global star of jazz guitar, and bass player Bandi Varady. The David Lyttle Three will perform live at The Lodge, Castlewellan, at 8pm on Saturday 15th October.

David Lyttle has been hailed by the international press as one of the most important jazz artists to emerge from Ireland in recent years. Originally from County Armagh, his groups have featured some of the globe’s most respected artists. Described by The Irish Times as ‘brilliant’ and by Jazzwise as ‘prolific’, David was awarded the ‘Best Young Irish Musician’ award at the Cork Jazz Festival in 2010.

Farmers Advised To Prepare For Another Big Chill

ACCORDING to Extacta Weather, December, January, and February are to experience below average temperatures, with the heaviest snowfalls occurring from November to January across many parts of the UK. NI Water and UFU are therefore urging farmers to consider now the impact this cold weather could have and protect their farm.

December 2010 was recorded as the coldest month in 100 years and approximately 4400 properties, including many farms, experienced an interruption to their water supply or faced the costly impact of a burst pipe.

McGrath Welcomes Fuel Poverty Report

COUNCILLOR Colin McGrath has welcomed the publication of a report ‘Defining Fuel Poverty in Northern Ireland: A Preliminary Review‘ by the University of Ulster.

Commenting the SDLP’s Down Council Health Spokesperson said, “It is a positive move forward that we can now define what fuel poverty is but it is essential that we now see action to tackle the problem.

End Of Line For Construction Work At Railway Centre

THE Downpatrick and County Down Railway marked the completion of construction work of the new £550,000 “Carriage Gallery”, as the keys were officially presented to the society by the contractors, Glasgiven Contracts.

Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Northern Ireland Tourist Board, as well as out the railway society’s own funds, the new public display area has been delivered on time and under budget.

John Wilson, project manager for the DCDR, said, “It has been a lot of work for a lot of people over the last nine months, however, we have made it, and under budget.”
