Wilson Mets With CBI

FINANCE Minister, Sammy Wilson has met with representatives of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) to discuss the Executive’s capital investment plans. Issues discussed included capital investment funding, the Executive’s capital investment priorities and the role of private finance in delivering infrastructure investment in Northern Ireland.

McGrath backs move to get empty shops back in business

DOWNPATRICK SDLP Councillor Colin McGrath voiced concern over the minister’s latest move on business rate relief, which may have come to late for some, writes Anne O’Hare.

The Finance Minister, Sammy Wilson outlined his proposals during an amendment to the Rates Bill which has been passed through the Assembly. The change will provide a major incentive for getting empty shops occupied and back into business.

Councillor McGrath said: “These are, without doubt, difficult times and businesses in our district, such as those in Downpatrick, are suffering like all others.

UK Fisheries Minister Visits Kilkeel

THE Anglo-North Irish Fish Producers Organisation (ANIFPO) was honoured to host the UK’s Fisheries Minister Richard Benyon MP during his visit to the fishing industry in Kilkeel this morning. Mr. Benyon, accompanied by Hugo Swire MP, Minister of State at the Northern Ireland Office, was on his first visit to the County Down coast as Fisheries Minister.

Fishing Industry Performing Strongly

IT was good news for the Northern Ireland fishing industry this week as the value of all fish and shellfish landings into Northern Ireland has continued a significant increase into 2011 compared to 2010. Figures just released by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Sea Fisheries Division show that in 2011 some 23,601 Tonnes of fish and shellfish were landed, with a value of £27.5 million. This compares to landings in 2010 of 23,902 Tonnes, valued at £22.1 million.

Translink introduce mobile ticketing for rail passengers

As Spring approaches many people from County Down will be planning a day trip to Dublin. Rail passengers in Northern Ireland can now take advantage of “on the go” ticketing with the launch of mLink, Translink’s innovative new mobile ticket. mLink enables passengers to buy, receive and display an electronic ticket on their mobile phone doing away with the need for a paper ticket and Catherine Mason, Translink Group Chief Executive, says it has been developed with the customer in mind. “We are committed to constantly innovating and improving our service for our passengers and through mLink we are providing rail customers with a convenient and easy to use ticketing system.

 Killyleagh Bar Damaged In Arson Attack

ARSONISTS have struck again in Killyleagh. This time a public house in the main street has been badly damaged. The PSNI reported that the fire was first alerted to the emergency services at shortly before 2.50am (22 December) and the NI Fire and Rescue Service dispatched fire tenders to the scene.

Foster Launches Intellectual Properties Pack

ENTERPRISE Minister Arlene Foster has launched an Intellectual Property Starter Pack aimed at helping local companies understand the intellectual property they own. Developed by Invest Northern Ireland as part of its wider Boosting Business initiative, it includes guides to the main types of intellectual property including patents, trademarks, copyright and design registration. Non Disclosure Agreements and licensing are also explained.

Is 'Time Up' for Northern Irish pubs?

COUNTY DOWN pub owners are paying 40 per cent more to breweries for their kegs of beer than their UK counterparts, Down News can exclusively reveal.

As the pub trade experience one of their hardest pre-Christmas trading in decades many are now being forced to lay-off staff or cut trading hours as their situation worsens, writes Anne O'Hare.

Opposition Mounts On EU December Fisheries Proposals

SDLP South Down MP Margaret Ritchie has said the European Commission’s fishing quota proposals are flawed and illogical.

In the run up to the EC Fisheries Summit in Brussels in December, a battle royale is looming as the local Co Down fishing fleet demand viable quotas for prawns and fish for 2012.

Speaking following the publication of these proposals, Ms Ritchie said, “These proposals are unworkable and unrealistic, much like the proposals we see coming before the industry from the European Commission at this time each year.

Beyond Summer BBQ For Local Businesses At Denvir’s

THE Beyond business programme covering Down District will host an end-of-summer networking BBQ for local Down businesses in Denvir’s Hotel, English Street, Downpatrick on Tuesday 23rd August from 5 – 7pm.

The BBQ will allow companies to come together in an informal setting and engage with other businesses in the district.

Since its launch in September 2010, the Beyond Programme has been successfully providing a high standard of tailored support to existing businesses in the Down District Council area. NIIRTA Welcomes Plans For Regeneration

The Northern Ireland Independent Retail Trade Association has given a warm welcome to Department for Social Development plans to regenerate local town centres in the wake of the publication of the Mary Portas report. NIIRTA Chief Executive Glyn Roberts said: “These are welcome plans as NIIRTA has long been calling for the Executive to develop an agreed action plan to regenerate our town and city centres and we look forward to working with them.”

Hamilton Says Rates Bill Benefits Business Community

Strangford DUP MLA Simon Hamilton has welcomed the passage through the Northern Ireland Assembly of the Rates Bill which will extend the Small Business Rates Relief scheme so that an additional 8,300 businesses across Northern Ireland will receive around £6 million in assistance. Commenting, Simon Hamilton, who is Assembly Private Secretary to The Minister of Finance and Personnel, said, "These are incredibly tough times for small businesses across the country. The economic downturn has put extreme pressure on thousands of businesses with many now no longer trading.

First Minister Welcomes Willowbrook Foods Expansion

First Minister Robinson has officially opened Willowbrook Foods Ltd new £5.5million factory in Killinchy. The company produces fresh, pre packed vegetables, salads and mash products and employs more than 160 people. The factory, which includes a novel innovation centre, is the culmination of an expansion programme that began in 2009 and is expected to create 25 new jobs.

Fears are confirmed at Bon Marche

  STAFF based at Downpatrick's Bon Marche fashion chain have been told their store will close over the next few months, writes Anne O'Hare. The Market Street shop is among 12 stores across the province that will close it's doors over the coming months. For the Downpatrick store, the news means the loss of five permanent jobs in an already difficult trading environment.

New Broadband Service For Rural Areas

Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster has today announced the award of a contract to deliver high-speed satellite broadband services to Onwave Ltd. New to the Northern Ireland market, Onwave will deliver high-speed satellite broadband services in areas where, due to commercial and technical reasons, broadband cannot be accessed via telephone lines. Announcing the award of the contract Arlene Foster said “This latest commitment by my Department recognises the ongoing need to ensure everyone is able to access broadband services which play an important role in economic, educational and social development.

 Hamilton Helps Launch Young Enterprise Scheme

Strangford DUP MLA Simon Hamilton was the guest speaker at a Young Enterprise event at the Girls Model School in Belfast. A group of Year 13 pupils have formed their own company “Eco Sheek Trendz” and have gained entrepreneurial skills through designing, marketing and selling trendy re-usable bags which are proving to be very popular with hundreds sold.

Fishing Industry To Face Tough Year In 2012

THE annual EU Fisheries Summit has now finished in Brussels running through last Thursday and Friday (15/16th December) and it has left Co Down prawn, white fish and herring fishermen with an overall difficult year ahead in 2012.  The fishing opportunities set through the Total Allowable Catches for each species are hammered out though the formal debates and the behind-the-scenes horse trading and despite increasing calls for more regional control for Northern Ireland's fishing industry, against a open acknowledgement that the Common Fisheries Policy has failed, each year sees a gloomy scenario unfold... like a pre-Christmas ritual. EU Commission Proposals are debated, argued against, and deals are struck. And further gloom spreads.

On-Street Parking Given Thumbs Down By Down Traders

AT a meeting in Denvir’s Hotel in Downpatrick to address the issues of on-street parking which may be implemented by the DRD after the May 5th election following a ‘consultation process’, traders from across Down District and the Mournes area voiced their deep concerns to the politicians present.

The meeting was organised by the Downpatrick Business Forum and Forum Chairman Patrick Cassidy clearly set out their opposition to the installation of on-street parking meters in local towns including Downpatrick and Newcastle. He said, ”My family have been trading for three generations in Downpatrick for 90 years.

Enright Supports NI Fishermen Over Prawn Prices

GREEN Party South Down Assembly and local election candidate Cadogan Enright has called for improved prices for Irish Sea prawns even though fishermen are currently receiving ‘high’ prices for their catch.

He said that after a careful examination that the average prawn prices have in reality been frozen oven the past ten years. “Our fishermen deserve a better deal than this,” he said.

On a visit to Ardglass harbour, Councillor Enright said, “Local fishermen have expressed concern to me that they have seen their returns on nephrops (prawns) undercut by unsustainable management practices at EU level for many years.

Crossgar Man’s Appointment To DETI Board

THE Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI) has appointed Crossgar man Dr Donal Flanagan who is well known in the Down area and Mr David Beck as Independent Members to the DETI Departmental Board.

In line with current best practice, the Department has appointed two Independent Members to the DETI Departmental Board. Dr Flanagan and Mr Beck replace the outgoing Independent Member of the Board, Dr Ian McMorris, whose term of office is coming to an end.

The primary role of an Independent Board Member is to contribute to the good governance of the organisation. Independent Board Members will offer constructive challenge across the organisation’s business, with a view to ensuring that all aspects of strategy and delivery of policy are scrutinised for effectiveness and efficiency.
