The Lord Mayor of Belfast Alderman Brian Kingston attended a Graduation ceremony at Titanic Creative Management’s south Belfast studio to congratulate students on completion of the creative training company’s first Summer School in prosthetics and SFX makeup.

The ten 13-17 year old students all graduated from the week long summer school which saw EMMY nominated Hollywood Makeup Artist, Brian Kinney, and founder of Titanic Creative Management, Nuala Campbell, provide them with an intensive training course in prosthetic and SFX makeup.

Graduating from the summer school, Natasha Stewart from Killyleagh, said: “My mum told me about the Titanic Creative Management Summer School as I’m really creative and love experimenting with makeup. I’ve really enjoyed the course. I’ve really enjoyed the training and it will certainly boost my career possibilities.”

Nuala Campbell, Managing Director, Titanic Creative Management, said: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and of the students this week. We have been very lucky to be able to bring an artist of Brian Kinney’s level to Belfast for this course but the young people who gained a place on our first summer school have shown a real keenness for learning, hanging on Brian’s ever word and working really hard on their projects.

“They have shown natural flair for working with prosthetics and I’m proud of what each and every one of them have achieved. They are the future and I’m delighted that Titanic Creative Management can equip them to explore a career in our industry.”

The summer school aimed to arm students interested in developing a career in the creative industries with a foundation in prosthetics and SFX makeup. The course also provided career advice and an insight into an industry which is regarded as difficult to break into in Northern Ireland. Titanic Creative Management are hoping to change this by providing high-level training courses like this for emerging artists here.

The Titanic Creative Management Summer School was sponsored by Movie House Cinemas and wouldn’t have been able to go ahead without their vital support.

“I’ve always had a keen interest in movies and the make up and special effects are a huge part of a great movie. I feel it’s important to support the local growing film industry in Northern Ireland and to develop the skills of future generations. Training with Brian Kinney is a real chance of a lifetime and a chance for people who aspire to a career in the Film and TV industry to learn from one of the best,” said Michael McAdam, Managing Director, Movie House Cinemas.

Titanic Creative Management is a social enterprise founded to provide opportunities for local emerging artists who want to work in makeup, hair and prop design.

Make-up artist and entrepreneur Nuala Campbell founded the social enterprise Titanic Creative Management with the aim of providing opportunities to local emerging artists wanting to work in makeup, hair and costume design in the creative industries, so that they can compete at a national and international level.

Currently there is a deficit of opportunity for local artists, especially those who are from disadvantaged backgrounds. With no tertiary education in these fields available in Ulster, there are very few local people working in this sphere of the film and television industry across Ireland and the UK. Emerging Irish artists are faced with geographical and financial barriers as they must travel to mainland UK to train on high-cost courses with added travel and accommodation expenses. This training and the subsequent jobs in productions such as Game of Thrones, based here in Belfast, are therefore currently reserved for those who can afford personal development and have access to the right networks.

Titanic Creative Management is addressing this problem, re-energising the industry by offering high level, professional training schemes in Belfast and providing bursary support for training to those who face socio-economic barriers to improving their employability potential. On a wider level, this will improve Northern Ireland’s economy and greatly assist in adding to Ulster’s increasingly renowned reputation as the filming destination for the world’s film and television industry.

Within a traditionally male-dominated industry, Nuala Campbell evolved into an experienced entrepreneur establishing and running several businesses over the past decade. With a background in accountancy and financial management, her expertise in business and strategising are second to none and she drives the vision of Titanic Creative Management.
