IMPORTANT ROAD NOTICE.

Transport Minister Danny Kennedy has announced that work is due to start on a resurfacing scheme on the A7 Belfast Road near Downpatrick at Cotterhill.

To facilitate the resurfacing work a temporary 40 mph speed limit will be introduced from Monday 17 November and the road will be closed from 9.15am to 4.30pm from Monday, 24 November to Friday 28 November 2014.

Danny Kennedy said: “This £130,000 scheme represents a significant investment in the roads infrastructure in the Downpatrick area.

“Once work is complete, road users will quickly realise the long term benefits from the new road surface along the stretch.”

TransportNI aims to keep disruptions to a minimum, however, delays should be expected and drivers are asked to be patient and allow additional time when planning journeys in the area whilst the road improvements are being carried out.

With all work of this nature extreme weather can impact on the completion date. TransportNI will advise the public of any unexpected change to the schedule.

Ritchie Welcomes A7 Improvements

South Down MP Margaret Ritchie has today expressed her delight in the news that the A7 road between Downpatrick and Belfast will benefit from a £130,000 investment from the Department of Regional Development. She  said: “The news of a “130,000 investment for the A7 Road is very welcome indeed. The A7 is a well-travelled road in this area of South Down and sees a high volume of traffic on a daily basis. Many local people, use this road to travel to work in Belfast and onwards so news that it will be getting a £130,000 investment for improvements is excellent.”

“I feel this investment for the A7 is well overdue. I only now hope that work to improve the road can begin as soon as possible in order that local people are traveling on roads that are in good condition. This is especially true coming into the winter months when we see how bad roads conditions can get, coupled with severe winter weather, this can prove hazardous for motorists.”

“We must also remember the £130,000 investment for improvements on the A7 between Downpatrick and Belfast will also benefit the local economy. It will encourage more people to visit the South Down area for employment and leisure and tourism.”
