JOBS, investment, innovation and adequate risk management against the fluctuating fossil fuel prices are all factors that Strangford can significantly benefit from if we harness our potential”, said MLA Jonathan Bell.

Speaking as the Northern Ireland Assembly addressing the issue of prioritising the green economy, Junior Minister Jonathan Bell said, ” I can envisage the Strangford economy significantly benefiting from the efforts to decarbonise our economy. Small businesses for example in the area of loft insulation and cavity wall insulation are ideally placed to match installation demand.

“In speaking with local businesses particularly in the construction and supply sectors I appreciate their efforts to support environmental sustainability and progress to a green, low carbon, resource efficient economy. I have been pressing to ensure that our natural assets locally such as Scrabo Tower, the Abbey at Greyabbey to  achieve their maximum tourist potential.

“This will include harnessing the trips from cruise ships and ensuring these historic environmental sites are given appropriate placements on the internet. I note that already the Abbey at Greyabbey is already featuring well on sites such as Trip Advisor.

“Harnessing the energy potential of strangford Lough must also be a priority for us. We need to address the risk of the fluctuating cost of fossil fuels – effectively dealing with green energy can mitigate against this.

“I am encouraged locally at how the South Eastern Regional College is progressing quality teaching and learning on the subject of the green economy. I encourage the Department of Employment and Learning to maintain their focus on these matters.”
