DRAFT STRATEGY FOR PROTECTING AND ENHANCING THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE IRISH LANGUAGE

The Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL) has prepared a consultative document containing proposals for a strategy for protecting and enhancing the development of the Irish language.

The consultation period will last for twenty weeks from Wednesday 11 July until Tuesday 27 November 2012.

The purpose of this public consultation is to seek views and feedback on the content of the draft Irish language strategy, which includes aims, objectives and areas for action to proactively protect, enhance and develop the Irish language.

The key aims of the draft Irish language strategy are to:

  • create a framework where Irish can flourish and be shared by all who wish to use it;
  • protect and support the development and learning of Irish; and
  • promote wider understanding of the background to the Irish language.

The strategy has the following objectives:

  • to increase the number of those who can access Irish medium education;
  • to increase the number of those that use public services through the Irish language; and
  • to increase access to Irish language media.

Key areas for action include education; family transmission of Irish; administration, services and community; media and technology; legislation and status of the language; and economic life.

Responses to the key questions contained in the document and any other feedback should be returned no later than 5:00pm on Tuesday 27 November 2012.

You can respond to the consultation online at the link below.  You can, of course, provide feedback on any aspect of the draft strategy in any format that best suits your needs.

The document is available in English and Irish.  If you would prefer a printed version, it can be obtained on request.  Should you require the consultation document in an accessible format such as Braille, audio-tape or large print, please contact the response co-ordinator.
