Down Mammies Ready For All Ireland Blitz

Down mammies from Bryansford GAC and Saval GAC are to compete in the annual Tesco Homegrown Gaelic4Mothers & Others Blitz.

On Saturday 18 October  the annual Gaelic4Mothers & Others blitz will take place in Naomh Mearnóg and St. Sylvester’s with over 1,100 women from right across the country taking part in a day of non-competitive football where having fun is the priority for the day. Tesco Homegrown have also returned as sponsors of the event which really is one of the best and most feelgood activities in the Ladies Gaelic Football calendar.

Over 77 clubs will take part in the blitz day with 100 teams taking the field to play football against each other. Scores are not kept and there are no winners, the emphasis is on playing some football, meeting new friends and enjoying all that the day has to offer. 27 counties will be represented at the blitz including 12 from Connacht, 19 from Munster, 11 from Ulster and 35 from across Leinster.

The famous mass warm up will take place again when ‘Ireland’s Mister Motivator’, Richie Clifford, puts all 1,000 participants through their paces again this year after proving a huge hit in 2013. This is a superb spectacle that has to be seen to be believed as players from right around the country run, jog, stretch, punch and kick their way into being prepared for the day of football that will follow.

The Gaelic4Mothers & Others programme has been a massive success since its inception and continues to go from strength to strength. It is aimed at women over the age of 18 with no limit on the age of the participants thereafter. The programme gives women that may have left sport, for any reason, an opportunity to get out and get active. Gaelic4Mothers & Others offers participants the chance to step back into sport without the burden of competitiveness whilst also doing so in a social way that is not provided by most other sports available to this age group.

Speaking about the Gaelic4Mothers & Others blitz, LGFA President, Pat Quill said ‘The Gaelic4Mothers & Others programme is one of the best sporting success stories, not only in the LGFA, but also in Irish Sport. We are providing women with a chance to get back into sport and enjoy all the benefits that go with it as well as the other benefits that having that social outlet provides. The continued growth of this programme would not be possible without the help of our sponsors, Tesco Homegrown, who have helped Gaelic4Mothers & Others to grow from an overall participation of 6,000 last year to nearly 9,000 this year. Today, 1,100 of those women will be here playing football, but even more importantly, enjoying themselves and creating a brilliant atmosphere.’

Tesco Ireland, Local Marketing Manager, Lynn Moynihan, commented, “The Gaelic4Mothers & Others is a great programme and a fantastic fit for Tesco Homegrown. We are committed to supporting the LGFA in developing the game at all levels in communities across the country. We share their passion for promoting female participation in sport along with healthy lifestyle choices. The Gaelic4Mothers & Others is a family fun filled day and we wish everyone the best of luck and hope all have a great day”
