At the end of a fantastic Summer Season, it’s onwards and upwards for Down Arts Centre with the launch of their Autumn Programme covering live events, exhibitions, classes and workshops for all ages from September to December 2014.

The new live event programme is bigger and better than ever, with fantastic music and theatre performances taking place every weekend.

Musical highlights include a tribute to French songstress Edith Piaf; Jazz from The Janet Seidel Trio and The Neil Cowley Trio; local folk songs from Fil Campbell and Tom McFarland; Blues from The Knotty Pine String Band and old-time American roots from Furnace Mountain. The musical line up for the new season also includes the very welcome return of Blues singer Grainne Duffy and The Illegals with Niamh Kavanagh, as well as performances by some very well known names – Beth Neilson Chapman, The 4 of Us, The Fureys, Beoga and Andrea Begley.

Live theatre kicks off with a performance by award-winning actor Guy Masterson in his powerful compendium of stories and poems from the Great War, Anthem for a Doomed Youth on Saturday 13 September, followed by something completely different on Saturday 20 September, Replay Theatre’s new show for the very youngest of audiences, TiNY. Designed for babies up to one year old and their grown-ups, the show takes place in its own magical theatre space and is performed to just a handful of babies at a time. Capacity is limited so book your tickets quickly!

Further theatre highlights include two opportunities for fans of Jane Austen to experience her stories brought to life, with Rebecca Vaughan’s popular show Austen’s Women on Sunday 21 September, and Persuasion, Austen’s most personal novel, brought to the stage by Hotbuckle Theatre Company on Saturday 18 October.

There is a glimpse into the soul of Oscar Wilde in Wilde without the Boy on 3 October and into the soul of a clown in Clown Noir: This is Me, on Saturday 15 November. We’re delighted to be working with Newcastle Community Cinema on this event, which will include the screening of a Buster Keaton film and a post-show chat with Clown Noir and NCC.

The panto this year is The Snow Queen, Hans Christian Anderson’s fable of love triumphing over evil, presented by Quantum Theatre from 26-28 November. Other performances for younger audiences include Jack and the Beanstalk on Wednesday 15 October and Babar the Little Elephant on Thursday 13 November.

Classes and workshops this season include old favourites such as Singers’ Circle, Painting, Creative Writing, Pottery and Flower Arranging, and newcomers, From Rococo to Impressionism – Arts in the 18th and 19th Centuries, Patchwork and a series of print workshops delivered by Belfast Print Workshop – Drypoint Printing, Acrylic-ground Aluminium Etching, Lino-Print and Monotype Print workshops.

Finally, keep Friday 19 September free, as the first ever Culture Night Downpatrick will take place in unusual locations throughout the town from 6pm – 9pm that night. Down Arts Centre are working with SERC and Down Community Arts to organise special events and workshops, free of charge, in participating locations.
