Councillor Willie Clarke Presses For 30 MPH Limit At Burrenbridge

Sinn Féin Mourne’s Councillor Willie Clarke has welcomed Transport NI’s proposal to introduce a 40-mph speed limit on the Burrenbridge Road,Castlewellan.

The Department of Infrastructure are currently consulting with Newry Mourne and Down District Council on their proposal, and while welcoming the proposal, I believe the Department should reconsider Sinn Féin’s original request, for the installation of a 30mph zone.

Chris Hazzard MLA and Cllr Willie Clarke with Burrenbridge Residents Association representatives Michael Donnelly and Bernard Mooney.

Cllr Clarke said: “Residents from the Burrenbridge Residents Association met with South Down MLA Chris Hazzard and myself last year in relation to having a reassessment of the current speed limit through Burrenbridge.

“Sinn Féin then made representations to Transport NI, requesting that a reduction in the speed limit be considered. I believe the proposal to introduce a 40-mph speed limit in Burrenbridge would go a long way to improving road safety in the area.

“While welcoming the progress in improving road safety in Burrenbridge  I have responded to the consultation that the area should have a 30mph speed limit introduced.”

Chris Hazzard MLA said: “While this proposal is being progressed, I would also call upon those driving through Burrenbridge to take into account the numbers of young children and elderly residents living in the area, who cross the road to access the local community garden and playpark.”
