SINN Féin Councillor, Mickey Coogan has called on Down Council to take advantage of the new European Energy Efficiency Facility (EEE-F) which was launched this week by the European Commission and the European Investment Bank (EIB).

Councillor Coogan said, “My party colleague Bairbre de Brún MEP has worked tirelessly in Brussels to ensure that such opportunities for funding are made available to local communities throughout the north, and I would strongly urge our public authorities to maximise the benefit from the upcoming EEE-F which will see an increased investment in smaller scale energy saving, energy efficiency and renewable energy projects throughout Europe.

“Down Council should be at the forefront of such progressive opportunities for the district, just some of the schemes that could be funded include: energy saving measures in public and private buildings; investment in decentralised renewable energy sources, including micro-generation; clean urban transport; the modernisation of infrastructure, such as street lighting and smart grids, as well as investment in sustainable energies with a potential for innovation and growth.”

“With investment rising above an initial £200 million, this is an opportunity that Down District must not overlook,” he added.
