Councillor Patrick Clarke said: “I welcome the start of construction of this £2.1m school projectwhich will provide an early year’s unit as a branch of Knockevein Special School in Downpatrick.

“The project has been in the pipeline for many years and it is terrific news for Knockevin Special School which has been in desperate need of this new Dundrum annex due to growing numbers at Downpatrick which is on a relatively small site.

“The new £2.1 school once completed will be able to provide state-of-the-art education and facilities in Dundrum catering for children in one of the most beautiful and scenic settings overlooking Murlough.

“It is a credit to all parties concerned for their long term vision, commitment and determination despite many setbacks and delays to be able to finally commence construction on the new school which will be a terrific addition to Knockevin Special School in Downpatrick.”
