SOUTH Down Sinn Féin Assembly candidate Willie Clarke attended a meeting last week in Kilkeel that explored the possibility of building Offshore Wind farms in the Irish Sea.

Councillor Clarke said, “Last week’s information session by Invest NI highlighted the potential of green energy and looked at plans for the installation of over 2,500 wind turbines in the Irish Sea at an estimated cost of £17 billion.

“Invest NI’s presentation provided an update on the progress they have made working  with Garrad Hassan, a renewable energy consultancy, as they seek to get a comprehensive overview of the opportunities and capabilities available  around our ports.

“Green sustainable energy has a good deal of potential in these emerging markets and it presents real opportunities particularly for local ports in Kilkeel and Warrenpoint that are ideally located to take advantage of the wide ranging supply chain and businesses that are developing innovative ways of producing sustainable energy,” said Councillor Clarke.
