Downpatrick Racecourse Running Since 1685

DOWNPATRICK Racecourse, situated a mile from the historic town of Downpatrick, is one of two racecourses in Northern Ireland and is the oldest in the all of Ireland. Horse racing takes place on an All-Ireland basis, so Downpatrick falls under the auspices of Horse Racing Ireland, rather than the British Horseracing Authority. With a reputation for friendliness, Downpatrick is well-supported by the locals and race meetings offering exciting flat and National Hunt (NH) racing tend to be informal, welcoming events.

Ladies Day At Downpatrick Races Draws Crowds

THERE was an excellent crowd of punters at the August Bank Holiday race meeting at Downpatrick Racecourse with over 3000 attending. The weather was perfect with the sun shining its best for late August.

On a sad note, the race meeting paid tribute to the late Paddy Maginley, at the start of the meeting by holding a minute’s silence. Paddy was chairman of the Downpatrick Race Club and passed away on 25th August after a short illness. The directors of the Race Club have expressed their deepest sympathy to his wife, Maeve, and children Mel, Claire, Helen and Patrick…

Downpatrick Jockey Awarded ‘Ride Of The Week’

Posted by Jim Masson On February - 3 - 2010 1 COMMENT DOWNPATRICK jockey Gerard Tumelty has picked up an accolade in the racing world by being voted the “Ride of the Week” by ‘At The Races’, a dedicated top, racing channel on Sky TV.

Riding in a the 2.10 race at Leicester last Tuesday, Tumelty rode a brilliant race to win on Ponchatrain for trainer Martin Keighley. In the weekly TV contest, it is the viewers who vote for their favourite rides. Gerard’s ride raised an impressive 58% of the total vote beating Tony McCoy on 10% and Haley Turner at 20%.
