McGrady Financial Services Junior X/C Series

SATURDAY was Juniors day. With the nearest races being the North West Championships in Gransha Hospital Grounds in Derry, no-one from the senior ranks was going to travel that distance one week before Christmas with the joys of shopping to be had much closer to home writes Joe Quinn. Well no-one that is except the indomitable Anne Sandford who puts us all to shame by taking part in races the length and breadth of the country every week

Castlewellan GAC Notes

OUR Annual General Meeting took place last Thursday in the clubrooms. Thank you to all who attended. Four of our officers stepped down from their roles as Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer and Games Development Officer having served their full five year term. Ronan King, Cillian Keaveney, Francie McAlinden and Miceal Crilly have put in absolute sterling work in their roles and quite often they burned the midnight oil in their respective jobs.

SERC in Top Form in Schools Cup

Wellington 2 – 9 SERC

The soccer team at South Eastern Regional College Downpatrick campus got off to a flying start in the second round of the Under 18’s School Cup against Wellington College, when Ryan Montgomery evaded the defensive rearguard to score with just two minutes on the clock.

Wellington were dealt another blow soon after, when their keeper and defender collided when trying to clear the ball, resulting in the keeper having to be substituted with a defender stepping into goals!

RGU Club Notes and Reports

Posted by Jim Masson On October - 31 - 2011

OUR thoughts are with our member Frank McCann, former Treasurer with the Club, who sadly lost his wife Roisin last week. In her heyday Roisin played camogie for the RGU and County. A Mhuire, Banrion na NGael guigh ar a hAnam.

The Senior Men brought their season to an end on Friday night evening when they failed by a single point to win the league decider against Castlewellan. Roll on next season when they will have the opportunity to mix it with the top teams in the county! writes Michael Starkey.

The U-16′s continued their campaign in the summer league with a 1pt win over Liatroim at PTR on Wednesday night. In a game which Liatroim dominated, the lads found themselves trailing by 10 points with nine minutes to go. Remarkably, three late goals and 2 late points helped them to an undeserved victory.

RGU are looking to the future with two brainstorming workshops aimed at garnering ideas, new blood, and a vision to carry the club forward for the next 5-10 years. The workshops hopefully will tease out how we move the club on in terms of how it is structured and the workshops will be facilitated by experienced personnel from within Down GAA and Ulster Council.

At these events all aspects of club activity will be scrutinised and at the end it is envisaged that we can develop a strategy to move our club on, not just in the playing arenas, but, just as importantly, within the local community and the wider GAA community in Down.

This is a piece of work that was absolutely necessary as we want to strengthen the foundations on which the club is built, but it has been given an even greater impetus with the promotion of our senior team back into Division 1 of ACFL. It is hoped we can set structures that will help re-establish RGU as one of the premier clubs in Down. Anyone interested in the future direction of the GAA in the county town is most welcome to come along and make their contribution on the dates below

Workshop 1 will be on Thursday 3rd November and Workshop 2 will be Tuesday 8th. Both will start at 7.30 sharp in the club and refreshments will be served. Please contact Karl Oakes or Collie Quinn to confirm attendance.

Training for the U-6′s and U-8′s will now take place indoors on Saturday afternoons from 1.30 pm to 2.30 pm at the Wellbeing Centre, in the Flying Horse. The U-12 girls will also train at the same venue from 2.30 pm to 3.30pm on Saturdays. Finally, hurling and camogie for the U-8′s and U-10′s will also move indoors to the Wellbeing Centre. They will train on Sundays from 3 pm to 4 pm.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the juvenile presentation will now take place on Sunday 27th Nov at 2pm. Parents and children from U-6′s right up to U-16′s, both boys and girls, are invited along.

Irish classes continue on Thursdays at 7.30pm. These classes are for total beginners and will cost £10 for 6 – 8 week session. For further information contact mariacollins62@btinternet.com, alternatively you can phone Maria on 07912029095.

Set dancing is back again after the summer break, and it takes place on Tuesday nights at 7.30pm. Anyone interested just turn up or ring Johnny on 07710369509.

Lotto numbers for this week were 13, 19, 23, and 28. Jackpot not won, four share £100. Next week’s jackpot £4000.

For party bookings ring Brian on 07745496213.

IRISH INTERMEDIATE CUP – ROUND 1

EAST BELFAST 1 BALLYNAHINCH UNITED 2

UNITED travelled to Inverary Avenue, Belfast, for this encounter against Division 1A team East Belfast. In any other circumstances United would not have feared this trip having defeated a tram from a higher position within that Division the previous week. However, on this occasion the team fielded minus six regulars (Ross Hayes, Scott Brashaw, Adam Herron, Gareth Bingham, Roman Gugulev and James Kingscott) who were unavailable for a variety of reasons.

Ford U-12′s Pull Off Championship Win Against Carryduff

Posted by Jim Masson On October - 25 - 2011

Bryansford U-12′s 2-05 Carryduff 2-03

THE final of the Under-12 and half (Year 9) championship took place in a wet and windy Teconnaught pitch between Bryansford and Carryduff.

Bryansford beaing Carryduff

The Bryansford U-12's celebrate in style after winning the championship beating Carryduff by two points.

Despite the terrible conditions both teams played with tremendous skill and determination. Bryansford, although having most of the possession, found scores hard to come by as the underfoot conditions at that side of the pitch were making life difficult.

Carryduff also were showing admirable defensive qualities and broke a number of times up the field and it was on two of these occasions they managed to hit the net. Bryansford only managed to score 2 points in the first half and went to the changing rooms knowing the score rate would have to increase if they were to beat the Carryduff lads.

The second half panned out much like the first, however the Ford lads were now able to convert more of the chances they were creating and scored 2 goals and 3 points against the Belfast lads 3 points leaving two points between the teams at the final whistle 2-05 to 2-03.

RGU Notes

FOLLOWING last week’s successes this was a quiet week on the pitch for the RGU. The U-16′s were unable to play their fixture against Leitrim in the summer league, and the Seniors had their Division 2 title play-off against Castlewellan postponed at the last minute. The U-16′s will play at home this Wednesday evening under lights at 7.30pm in the rescheduled fixture against Leitrim.
