Hamilton Says Retail Is Big Key To Economic Regeneration

Posted by Jim Masson On November - 1 - 2011

STRANGFORD MLA Simon Hamilton has told the Retail NI Conference that the retail sector will play an important role in regenerating the local economy.

Speaking at the conference at the Stormont Hotel, Simon Hamilton, who is the Assembly Private Secretary to the Finance Minister, said, “I think that sometimes retail is viewed unfairly as inferior to all other forms of employment and that it’s contribution to the economy is second rate to say manufacturing.

“What is often overlooked is the sheer size of the retail sector in Northern Ireland. Some 18% of all employees work in retail related companies while nearly 9% of all businesses are retail ones. A sector that size can in no way be described as second rate.

Another Potty Hallowtides Festival In Newcastle

ONCE again Newcastle’s Hallowtides Festival was deemed a triumphant success, despite the weather’s best attempts to derail the ‘Potty Express’. Tens of thousands of eager spectators and participants descended on a wet and windy promenade on Saturday 29 October hoping that the weather would turn, and turn it did!

But has Anne Moreland acquired some witchy, occult spells as the Down District Council Hallowtides Events Officer because, for the second year in a row, she has managed to conjur up good weather from her cauldron in the face of rain, cold and wind?

Leading the parade was Down District Council Chairman Councillor Dermot Curran who said, “I was overwhelmed with the crowds who took to the streets of Newcastle on Saturday, and I wish to convey my sincere thanks not only to the staff from all sections across the Council who were involved in delivering this event, but tremendous praise and appreciation must be extended to the Newcastle Chamber of Commerce, the shopkeepers, sponsors, the schools and indeed the wider community who all made such a huge effort to create an event which was thoroughly enjoyed by the people of Down District and those who travelled to the town for the Hallowtides celebrations. ”

John Peacocke, Chairman of Lecale Conservation, an environmental group set up to promote and protect the Lecale environment, said, “I have observed this leak for most of this year. It is quite noticeable at the moment. Oil or a petrol-like liquid is definitely leaking in to the river from close to the new drain that was built recently.

“The surface of the Glasswater is noticeably covered in an oily film and the rainbows are very conspicuous. And you can smell it quite clearly.
