Castlewellan Notes

Senior Hurlers finally got a game this week after having no officials turn up in the past few weeks. Some of their opposition in particular Portaferry travelled to the Town three weeks ago only for there to be no officials which is not fair on them considering their journey. No officials appeared for last Monday Night’s game. However on Wednesday Night they played Ballyvarley and won by 5 points. A good result for Martin and the lads considering their lack of game time recently. The Seconds Footballers played host to An Riocht on Sunday past, and went down 2-12 to 1-10 in a game that could have been won. Best for the town was Conall Corrigan, Daniel Morgan & Matthew Stratton. The score line of 2-03 to 1-03 to the visitors suggests a close and tight encounter. Some of the Senior Hurlers were impressed by their stick work and general skills from the girls. There were great performances from Megan Murdock scorer of the Town’s goal, Anna Rogan who scored 0-02, Catriona Caldwell and Becky White who scored 0-01. The performance against one of the top teams in Down is more remarkable when you consider the chances missed. This will not be lost on Dessie and Noreen. That said keep of the good work and keep her lit. Castlewellan U-12’s registered another victory in the U12 League away to Bright last Sunday, playing some great football and scores coming from 10 different players. Team: Cahal Caldwell, Daniel Cunningham, Adam McAleese (2-2), Matthew Muldoon, Matthew Carville 1-4), Adam Garland (1-2),James McAleenan(2-2), Callum McKibben, Daire McVeigh (1-2), Ethan Aulds (2-0), Conor Keenan (1-2), Brian Brannigan, Callum McCabe, Cleveland Boyle, Mark Rice(2-0), Dara Fitzpatrick (1-0), Oisin O’Toole, Ruairi McGuinness (1-3). Brian and the rest of the Management Team are impressed with the lads and their commitment. They are working hard and improving all the time. Whilst Down exited the Ulster Minor & Senior Championship on Saturday past Ruairi McGuinness representing his primary school kept the flag flying in the half-time primary school games against Armagh in the Morgan Athletic Grounds scoring 1-01. Well done Ruairi. The Under-12 Girls footballers are having a bad run of luck in that opposition are not able to fulfil fixtures with them. For three week in a row there has [caption id="attachment_24455" align="alignright" width="267" caption="Conall Corrigan in action for the Castlewellan Seconds against An Riocht."][/caption] been no game for them for various different reasons. This is unfortunate when the young ladies are eager to play games only to be disappointed at the last minute. Lawrence and Sarah are pleased with the effort being made in attendance at training which will continue as usual on Wednesday evening at 5.15pm. The Under-16 girls Footballers had a good win over Newry Shamrocks on Sunday past in the County league The heart screening programme for our younger players took place in the Club on Thursday past. Thank you to all the participants in this worthwhile exercise. Thank you to Miceal Crilly for the organisation of this worthwhile event. A County Camogie Night was held in the Slieve Donard Hotel on Sunday Night past. In attendance in their glad rags were Betty & Sinead. Noreen is now obviously Betty’s ex-singing partner. The new duet who attended the Abba Tribute Night I am sure will be seen at the F-Factor later in the year. I am sure there will be no problem recognising their accents! (we are a wee bit more cosmopolitan!) *The tote numbers for the 29/05/11 were 8, 10, 15 & 24. There were no jackpot and two £20 winners – Conor King and Brendan McLoughlin – Jackpot next week £6300.]]>
