Castlewellan GAC Notes

Senior team enjoyed the second win of their campaign by defeating Annaclone by 2-15 to 3-06 on Saturday last on a very warm afternoon for both teams. The Town started in great fashion with a goal from Kevin Duffin. At this point it looked like The Town would run away with it leading 1-02 to no score but Annaclone came right back hitting 1-04 without reply. The Town got to grips again winning more break ball around midfield. In the 10 minutes before half time they hit six unanswered points to lead 1-08 to 1-04 at half time. The Town and Annaclone had early exchanges in the second half before a high ball into the Annaclone defence ended with Donal McKibben palming the ball to the back of the net. At this point The Town lead comfortably by 2-11 to 1-05. Annaclone replied immediately with a goal from an acute angle which beat Danny Cassidy in The Town goals. Further exchange of points before Annaclone scored a third goal. Castlewellan finished out the game with points from Daniel Morgan and Fintan McGreevy. The second half lasted 40 minutes. It was difficult to see where the extra time came from with only a few stoppages in the second half. Nevertheless another good win for the Town before the next outing against local rivals Laitriom Fontenoys this week. Our Ladies’ Team was due to host Clonduff last Saturday evening in St Malachy’s Park. Unfortunately Clonduff were not able to fulfil the fixture. The Minors started their All-County League Division 1 campaign with a good win at Saul with a score line of 3-11 to 0-15. Goals from Cahal Keown and Callum Croskery saw the Town home. The lads know that a better performance will be required against Clonduff this week at St Malachy’s if they are to compete strongly in this division. Our Under-14 team lost out to Bredagh in their second match in the league last week. They showed great character against their stronger rivals. They are starting to show some good improvement. Keep it up lads. Your managers are pleased with the effort you are putting. As in all our underage teams we encourage parents and family to come along and support the young players.
