Bright GAC Club Notes For 13 April 2014

The men faced Ardglass away on Friday night in their fourth round fixture of the league so far.

With BJ McMenamin making his first competitive start of the season he was in fine form scoring 1-7 of Brights score. The first two points of the game he popped over in the opening minutes. Ardglass shot a couple of wides and a ball dropping short was cleared by keeper Michael Farrand. A tackle on Francis Gerard McKinney saw Ardglass receive the first black card of the game.

Another attempt by Ardglass was cleared by Joe Farrand and resulted in another point for Bright from Freddie O’Connor. A few mistakes from Brights passes gave Ardglass some scoring chances but luckily for Bright these were all hit wide. Bright struggled to win the ball in midfield losing the majority of kickouts despite this though, great defensive work ensured Ardglass scores were kept to a minimal.dn_screen

Conor Doyle and Corey Ranaghan added their names to the score sheet with a point each. With only a few mins remaining to half time Ciaran Quinn sustained a nasty leg injury and was replaced on the field by Conor Black. The Ardglass keeper denied BJ McMenamin a goal but Bright answered back with a point.

With Bright’s sub bench packed to capacity a few changes were made at half-time.  James Hanna, Seamus Tumelty and Cormac McLaughlin were introduced to the game. Conor Kelly got the first point of the second half while Ardglass soon followed with a score. BJ scored another two points followed by Conor Doyle scoreing from a free awarded to John McLeigh. With 20 mins gone team captain Conor McAllister joined the game to take over from Kevin Groves to help in midfield.

With the ball won by Bright and a great run from Freddie to feed BJ another point was scored. Points from Matthew Burns, BJ and Conor Kelly gave bright a substantial lead. Michael Farrand kept clean sheet clearing any attempts for goal that were made by Ardglass. BJ ensured there was no come back for Ardglass when he rattled the back of the net for goal. A foul on James Hanna saw Ardglass finish the remainder of the game with 14 men.  the final scoring being Bright 1-14 Ardglass 0-7.  Fantastic result for Bright giving them 4 out of 4, in tier league campaign so far.  We wish Ciaran Quinn a speedy recovery writes Ciara Sharvin.

The ladies had their first league match of the season on Saturday night with an away fixture against recently demoted Burren.  As the ladies themselves are newly promoted to Intermediate status this year, this match was eagerly anticipated.  The girls knew this was going to be a tough match but held the belief that they could get the two points needed to kick off their league campaign.

The first half started of a little shaky with Burren getting the first few scores, but Bright stuck in there and composed themselves and soon found themselves hot on the heels of their opponents.  At half time the score was 1-4 to 1-6 to Burren.  the second half saw some positional changes due to slight injury, but this did nothing to hamper Brights progress.  The game stepped up a notch and it was alot of point for point scoring for the majority of the half.

Until Bright found themselves down a player due to a sin bin, thats when they went the extra inch and started to dominate the Burren girls by scoring two fantastic goals in short succession,  followed by some more points, Burren found it hard to get they ball out of their defense and with some fantastic individual displays from Sarah Venney and Roisin Torney Bright held out until the final whistle, coming away with a score of 4-9 to 2-8.  Brilliant first result girls, training continues Tuesday at 6.30pm.
