Sinn Féin Newry and Mourne Councillor Michael Ruane has called on people to use Bliain na Gaeilge as an opportunity to learn the Irish language.
Councillor Ruane said: “I attended the launch at Warrenpoint of Bliain na Gaeilge and was delighted that there is a programme of events to promote the Irish language.
“The Irish language is undergoing a major revival and the programme reflects the confidence within the Irish language community to bring it into everyday use. The Liofa campaign launched by the Culture Minister Carál Ní Chuilín has heightened awareness of the richness of the Irish language and has seen over 3500 take a pledge to become fluent by 2015.
“The Irish language is one of the oldest documented languages in the world and its use threatens no-one, so Bliain na Gaeilge is a great opportunity for people to sign up for Liofa and learn what is a beautiful language.”
