DETECTIVES in Downpatrick are appealing for information after a report of an assault at premises on the Saul Road area last night (Sunday, 9th October).

The male escaped from the scene, but was then caught by one of the attackers who again assaulted the man. The man escaped a second time from the scene. It is believed that a sum of money was taken from the car at the time of the incident.
The man, who was identified today as Seamus Murphy, the caterer at Downpatrick Golf Club, was taken to a nearby hospital and treated for head injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.
The two men involved in the attack are described as large build, wearing balaclavas, gloves and wearing combat style jackets. The men were wearing dark bottoms and white training shoes.
Anyone who has any information is asked to contact Downpatrick CID on 0845 600 8000. Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.
SDLP Leader and South Down MP Margaret Ritchie has said the Downpatrick community is disgusted at a violent attack on a local man as he left his place of work in the town on Sunday night.
She said, “This must have been extremely traumatic for the victim and I wish him a full and fast recovery from this ordeal. This attack is out of keeping with the Downpatrick area and has shocked and disgusted local people.
“As a community we must ensure that the perpetrators of this vicious incident are brought to justice and that attacks like this are not repeated.
“The Saul Road area of Downpatrick has a tight knit community and I have no doubt that the great community spirit which exists in this area will ensure that all information about this act of brutality is passed onto the police.”
Also, condemning the attack, Down District Councillor Colin McGrath said, ‘This type of incident is totally unwelcome in our town.
“To have people dealing with matters in this way is unacceptable. This particular incident appears all the more sinister and chilling because of the premeditated nature of it – with balaclavas, gloves and the exceptionally covert method of the attack. I would appeal to anyone with information to contact the PSNI immediately.”
Following the attack on the Saul Road by two men with baseball bats, Downpatrick Golf Club caterer Seamus Murphy was left with a serious head wound to the back of his head which could have had a very serious outcome. The large gash which required immediate medical treatment.
Police are still continuing their inquiries into the incident.
