John Noble, Partnership chairman, said, "The aim of the meeting, which was supported by the European Union's Town Twinning Programme and the Paterna Municipality, was to bring together citizens from across Europe to discuss economic issues that are affecting all of us in the current climate.

"Over the three day event participants shared information on each towns economic position and how it is being effected by the current ongoing recession. In addition participants had an opportunity to share with each other some example of best practice in terms of good economic projects.

"And there was an opportunity to examine ways to promote the local economy in each town participating in this conference. Ideas included an aim to develop a language school, the promotion of the craft industries in each country and the opportunity to promote Downpatrick as a potential tourist attraction.

"The event itself proved an economic benefit to Paterna with over €20,000 in an indirect benefit going into the local economy from the participants attending the event.

"The Downpatrick Twinning Partnership and its network of European towns now plan to follow the ideas arising from the meeting up with further research for cooperation and future projects," added Mr Noble.
